Year 1 Harvest

The children had a wonderful time visiting Christ Church to celebrate Harvest. They participated in mini workshops where they were able to engage in a variety of fun activities based on the theme of Harvest. They were also encouraged to reflect on all the things they were thankful for and how we can help others in the community.

Little Acorns Autumn

This term in Little Acorns our theme is ‘Ourselves’ and ‘Autumn’. This week we have been celebrating ‘Hello Yellow’ by exploring lots of yellow activities from creating yellow collages and investigating a yellow sensory tray. Hello Yellow Day is all about mental health so we discussed different emotions and how we can express them through songs and stories. We also used yellow playdough with leaves we had collected to create different emotions.

Black History Month 2025

Theme: "Standing Firm in Power and Pride"

Black History Month 2025 is a momentous occasion to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of black people to British society. Black people have always been at the forefront of social justice movements, fighting against oppression and paving the way for change. However, despite their countless contributions to society, the achievements of black people have too often been overlooked or forgotten.

The theme for Black History Month UK in 2025 is "Standing Firm in Power and Pride", which celebrates the resilience and strength of Black communities and acknowledges the profound contributions of Black leaders, activists and pioneers while looking toward continued empowerment and growth.

During October, every class at Four Oaks Primary School dedicated their lesson time to celebrating Black History Month. Our main task was to learn about significant black people and to celebrate their exceptional achievements. In KS1 and KS2, we learned about Mary Seacole, Rosa Parks, Katherine Johnson, Nelson Mandela, Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King Jr. Black History links to all aspects of the EYFS and is not contained to just one month of the year!

Throughout the year we are inspired by different artwork, print and patterns from different cultures, we read a range of stories from different cultures and countries. In EYFS, we also talk about our families and history when we create our self-portraits. We discuss different countries that our important to our children and find out about them. We also reminded each other that there is no room for racism in our lives and that we will continue to be kind to everybody all the time - regardless of our backgrounds. We have also been listening to and enjoying some songs from our special playlist.

By the end of this month, we will have listened to 30 influential black musicians with this listening calendar:

  • “Katherine Johnson was a significant person. I can’t believe she worked for NASA! She was like a human computer!” (Peace, Year 3)
