Black History Month 2026 and Wear Red Day
Theme: " Honouring Our Communities " focusing on everyday contributors who strengthen Black British life.
Black History Month 2026 is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions that Black people have made to British society.
Throughout October, every class at Four Oaks Primary School dedicated lesson time to celebrating Black History Month. Our main focus was learning about significant Black people from our local area and recognising their remarkable achievements and contributions to the community.
In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, pupils learned about Howard Gayle, Arnold E. Davis, John Richard Archer, Eric Lynch, Emma Clarke, Dorothy Kuya and Charles Wotten. Through their studies, children developed an understanding of the positive impact these individuals have had on society.
In Nursery, children read the story Hair Like Mine, created self-portraits, and explored and celebrated their unique identities and differences. In Reception, children enjoyed learning about Garrett Morgan and how his invention helps to keep people safe in our communities.
Regularly, we remind each other that there is no room for racism in our lives and that we will continue to be kind to everybody all the time - regardless of our backgrounds. On Friday 16th October 2026, we took part in Wear Red Day, a national event that encourages people to wear red to demonstrate their support for anti-racism and to challenge discrimination.
At Four Oaks Primary School, we are committed to promoting inclusion, respect, equality and kindness for all. By taking part in Wear Red Day, we showed our support for creating a community where everyone feels valued, welcomed and able to thrive. Together, we promoted a message of acceptance, understanding and belonging for everyone.
As part of our Black History Month celebrations, we enjoyed a daily music journey, discovering 30 influential Black musicians and learning about their achievements and lasting legacy.
