School Highlights

Year 3 – Plants

This week in Science, Year 3 investigated the function of a plant's stem! We learned that the stem acts like a straw, transporting water from the roots to the leaves. To test this, we became scientists and placed celery and gypsophila flowers into water coloured with blue food colouring and made predictions about what we thought would happen. The children enjoyed working scientifically by carrying out the investigation, making observations and discussing their findings. We are looking forward to seeing the results and using the evidence to explain the important role of the stem within a plant.

Little Acorns – Storytime

This week in Little Acorns, we have been enjoying the story ‘I went walking’. Inspired by the book, the children explored different footprints through excited sensory activities, using paint with toy animals to create and investigating a variety of textures with their feet, developing their sensory awareness. We finished the week with a walk around our school, taking clipboards and paper to make marks of the things we could see, using repeated story phrases to encourage communication and language as we explored our environment.

A Message from the Headteacher

Dear families,

As we approach the end of another busy week, we wanted to use this message space to say a HUGE well done to children who have been accessing the Government Statutory tests. The Government sets the pass marks for the whole country once all tests are completed, and we will update you once the pass marks are released. As in all previous years, we are expecting our results in all year groups to be above the National average.

Tests in June include:

· Year 1 Phonics Screening Check (PSC). The children were brilliant! They all completed the individual PSC confidently and every child achieved very well.

· Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). Y4 teachers are very proud of you. You did exceptionally well with many children scoring full marks.

We have noticed that children who do well with their recall of multiplication facts find year 6 SATS much easier to complete. You are well set to be brilliant when you reach Y6 too!

· Year 6 Writing SATS. We have reported previously how well Y6 did with their Reading, Grammar, Spelling and Maths SATS in May. This month was Writing SATs.

We had two experienced external Writing Moderators come to school on separate days to review the children’s work. Both moderators were very impressed with the quality of the writing and the sophisticated use of style and vocabulary. The Moderator graded teacher assessments of writing as excellent, and they praised the high-quality curriculum and teaching that led to such strong writing outcomes for all children.

Personally, I have been very impressed with the children’s enthusiasm for refining and polishing their portfolios of writing. Their mature approach and determination to produce high quality work is credit to them. It was a joy to work alongside them.

Well done to all the children for achieving so highly and working so positively.

Everyone at Four Oaks is very proud of your efforts and success.
