Year 4 – Science – Crosby Beach
Year 4 became real scientists this week during an exciting trip to Crosby Beach! We investigated the impact of pollution and microplastics on marine life and explored the difference between natural and manufactured objects. We discussed things that are alive, once alive and never been alive, as well as how tides can wash rubbish and debris onto beaches. The children learned about biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials and why some items can be harmful to marine life. Supported by adults, we carefully searched for interesting items on the beach, describing their features and discussing how humans can help protect our environment by reducing litter and waste. We also focused on beach safety and only handled items when adults said it was safe to do so. The children worked incredibly hard, took lots of photos and thoroughly enjoyed this hands-on learning experience. We look forward to continuing our learning back in the classroom during our next science lesson!
“I really enjoyed this trip, although it was sad to see how much plastic is on our beaches!” (Billy)
“I found many pieces of plastic, litter and debris that doesn’t belong there because it could harm the marine life!” (Dolcie)
“I was shocked to see how much debris was on the beach! Humans must try harder to keep our environment safe and clean!” (Wyatt)
