Year 3 - Science

In Science this week, Year 3 explored different types of rocks and learned how to compare and group them based on their appearance and physical properties. We focused on the three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. First, we looked at the definitions of each rock type and discussed how they are formed inside the Earth. To help bring our learning to life, we carried out a fun hands-on activity using chocolate to represent rocks! We grated three different types of chocolate to create ‘sediments’ and then demonstrated how each rock type forms. For sedimentary rocks, we layered the chocolate sediments and pressed them down. For igneous rocks, we melted the chocolate and allowed it to cool and harden. For metamorphic rocks, we used the heat and pressure from our hands to squash the chocolate together and form a new shape. The children loved this practical experiment, and it helped them to better understand how these different rocks are formed.

World Book Day in Year 1

The children had a lovely day celebrating World Book Day. Some children brought in books from home to share with the children. All children have enjoyed reading for pleasure and sharing stories and book recommendations with their friends.

Quotes:

Mila “I like this book because it has lots of activities inside.”

Nell “I like reading and I have a pile of books at home. This book is good and the centipede is really funny.”

Meghan “I picked this book to bring in because I have a matching dress. My favourite character in the story is Elsa.

Isabelle “I like this book because it is fun!”

A Message from the Headteacher

World Book Day was a great success. Many thanks to all the families for supporting this special celebration of reading. It was fun to see the costumes and hear the children talk about why they were inspired to dress as their favourite character. Equally, inspiring was listening to the children who chose not to dress up but to enthuse about their favourite authors and genres of stories and share this love of reading with people around them.

We also enjoyed author and illustrator 'zoom' sessions in class as well as an opportunity for different year groups to visit each other and share stories. The younger children loved having KS2 children come and read their favourite stories to them. We hope you all enjoy using your World Book day voucher that was sent home yesterday and that all the family are able to find time to curl up with a good book this weekend!

Mrs Robinson, Headteacher.

“I dressed as Harry Potter because he is my favourite character from the book we read!” (Wyatt, Y4)

“I enjoyed reading books with the children in Reception. We were excited to share our books with each other!” (Hallie, Y4)

“This is the best day ever! We dress as our favourite characters, share our favourite books and have lots of fun!” (Dolcie, Y4)
